What you need to know to become a candidate in the 2025 Sturgeon County Municipal Election

County Council plays an important role in working with our community to support its diverse needs and shape its future. Learn more about key information for candidates in the upcoming election and the next steps you will need to take as you move forward with your candidacy.

Candidate Eligibility

Before completing your Notice of Intent or Nomination Papers, please confirm eligibility.

To be eligible to be nominated as a candidate, you must be:

  • At least 18 years old on Nomination Day (September 22, 2025).
  • A Canadian citizen.
  • A resident of Sturgeon County for the six consecutive months immediately before Nomination Day (September 22, 2025).
  • A resident of Sturgeon County on Election Day (October 20, 2025).
  • Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified under sections 22, 23 and 23.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

Prospective candidates must understand the full extent of their legislated obligations. The information contained on our site is provided as a guide. We encourage prospective candidates to seek independent legal advice as required.

Individuals are encouraged to review the eligibility criteria in the Local Authorities Election Act prior to submitting a notice of intent. 

Submit Your Notice of Intent

To begin your nomination process, you must first submit your Notice of Intent to Run. The Notice of Intent is a new legislated requirement and is different than the nomination process. 

Candidates who intend to run in the 2025 Sturgeon County Municipal Election can only accept contributions and incur expenses once their Notice of Intent Form is complete and they have been added to the Register of Candidates.

  • A Notice of Intent Form can be submitted any time during the campaign period until nomination day October 31, 2024, to September 22, 2025. 
  • A notice of intent and being added to the Register of Candidates is not a substitute for completing the nomination process which starts January 1, 2025, and closes at 12 noon on Nomination Day, September 22, 2025. 
  • After January 1, 2025, candidates may submit their Nomination Forms and Notice of Intent Form at the same time. Nomination forms must be submitted with a Notice of Intent Form if you plan to accept contributions or incur expenses.

School Boards Trustee: Please visit Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, Sturgeon Public Schools and Elk Island Catholic Separate School Division.

Mayor and councillor candidates intending to run must notify the Election Office.

Once confirmed by Sturgeon County Returning Officer, the name of the candidate will be included on the Register of Candidates and posted publicly in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act. Once a Notice of Intent Form has been accepted by the Returning Officer, an individual is allowed to accept contributions and/or incur campaign expenses according to the rules set out in the Local Authorities Election Act and the Expense Limits Regulation.

  • 2024 Campaign Disclosure Statement: If you have accepted contributions or incurred expenses in 2024 you must file the required campaign disclosure forms by March 1, 2025.
  • 2025 Campaign Disclosure Statement: If you have accepted contributions or incurred expenses in 2025 you must file the required campaign disclosure forms by March 1, 2026.

File Your Nomination Papers

After you've submitted your Notice of Intent to Run, your next step is to file your Nomination Forms, Candidate Financial Information and Candidate Information Disclosure Form.

The nomination period for the 2025 Sturgeon County Municipal Election runs from January 1, 2025, and closes at 12 noon on September 22, 2025 (Nomination Day).

You can become a candidate for one of the following:

  • Mayor
  • Councillor
  • Public School Board Trustee
  • Catholic School Board Trustee

Before submitting your nomination, please confirm your eligibility.

Submitting your Nomination

You may file your nomination forms starting January 2, 2025 up until the close of nominations on September 22, 2025 by 12 noon (Nomination Day). The nomination forms must be signed by the candidate and witnessed by a Commissioner for Oaths in Alberta. Original wet signatures of at least 5 electors who are eligible to vote in the 2025 municipal election and who are resident in the local jurisdiction on the date of signing the nomination are required, no photocopies, facsimiles or emailed forms will be accepted.

An appointment with the Returning Officer is required to file your nomination papers. You can request an appointment with the Returning Officer by emailing election@sturgeoncounty.ca or by telephoning 780-939-1377.

Note: A person who files a nomination should also submit their notice of intent at the same time. If the notice of intent is not filed the same day, the candidate cannot accept contributions or incur expenses.


Campaign Disclosure & Financials

Candidates for mayor, councillor and school board trustee, or any person acting on behalf of a candidate, are responsible for ensuring they understand all campaign financial rules. Candidates, or their official agent(s), are encouraged to review Part 5.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) that outlines all campaign finance rules and seek their own legal advice when needed.

Campaign Disclosure Statements

  • 2024 Campaign Disclosure Statement: If you have accepted contributions or incurred expenses in 2024 you must file the required campaign disclosure forms by March 1, 2025.
  • NEW – 2025 Campaign Disclosure Statement: If you have accepted contributions or incurred expenses between January 1 and July 31, 2025, you must file the required campaign disclosure form by September 30, 2025.
  • 2025 Campaign Disclosure Statement: If you have accepted contributions or incurred expenses in 2025 you must file the required campaign disclosure forms by March 1, 2026.

  2. Submit your Campaign Disclosure Statement form and attachments:
