Counting Votes
Previously, Sturgeon County used electronic vote tabulators to count ballots and generate election results. Vote tabulators provided results in less than 30 minutes following the close of voting stations.
With recent changes to the Local Authorities Election Act, municipalities are now only allowed to generate results using traditional hand count methods. These methods could take several hours as it is done by real people, in real time. To ensure accuracy in the count, ballots will be counted and then verified to confirm the results.
On Election Day (Monday, October 20) at 7:30pm, ballots from Advance Voting, Special Ballots, and Institutional Voting are counted at the “Counting Centre” (Cardiff Room, Sturgeon County Centre), as designated by the Returning Officer.
On Election Day (Monday, October 20) after the polls close at 8pm, and all electors present at the voting stations have cast their ballots, election workers will begin counting the votes cast at their assigned Voting Stations. After all ballots are counted, they will immediately be returned to the Returning Officer at Sturgeon County Centre.
Election Results
When the complete results for an elected office (Mayor or Divisional Councillor) are confirmed—meaning, when all voting stations have reported their results, and the election materials are returned to Sturgeon County Centre and verified by the Returning Officer, the unofficial result information will be published to the Sturgeon County Election website (this page you are on currently).
Unofficial election results will be shared as soon as possible; however, due to the requirement to hand count ballots, the unofficial results may not be made public until Tuesday, October 21.
On Friday, October 24, 2025, official results will be registered with Alberta Municipal Affairs and published via news release on the Sturgeon County website.
We thank candidates and residents for their patience in giving our valued election workers the time and space needed to ensure a fair, accurate and transparent election process. Sturgeon County is committed to completing the count as efficiently as possible.
