The Province has passed the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 which makes changes to two pieces of municipal-related legislation: the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA) which came into force on October 31, 2024.


Official Candidates

The official list of candidates for the 2025 Municipal Election in Sturgeon County will be finalized at 12 p.m. (noon) on September 23, 2025. Those seeking public office must formally declare their intentions to run by filing their nomination papers by Nomination Day (September 22, 2025). Candidates are running for the offices of Mayor and Councillor.

The County has also partnered with the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, St. Albert Public Schools and Elk Island Catholic Separate School Division to conduct their 2025 school trustee election.

Register Of Candidates

The Register of Candidates is a record of all candidates who have given notice to Sturgeon County that they intend to seek nomination for office in the next election.

The County is required to maintain a register of candidates that have given notice to run and the register will be publicly available on the Sturgeon County website until December 31, 2025.

Candidate Disclosure Statements

The legislation under Part 5.1 of the LAEA requires candidates to prepare and file with the municipality a disclosure statement in the prescribed form on or before March 1 of each year if the candidate received contributions in the previous year.
