The Project

The first Victoria Trail Bridge was built in 1931 and spans the Redwater River, located north of Highway 38 and west of the confluence with the North Saskatchewan River, which itself was jointly recognized as a Canadian Heritage River by the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada in 2024.

The bridge has a series of restrictions in place, including height, width, weight, and speed, and in recent years has been the subject of several maintenance issues and closures.

Weekly Project Updates

The contractor is in a planned construction pause until April 6. The overall project completion is now expected around June 9, 2026, weather permitting.

Recent progress includes removal of temporary winter concrete protection, installation and bracing of pier piles on both sides of the bridge, and riprap work is now about 70 per cent complete.

Work continued this week on the south and north piers.

Crews continue to make progress on this project. Watch the progress in the time lapse video featured on this project page.

Work on the bridge continues. If everything stays on schedule, the project is expected to be finished and the road reopened around May 12, 2026.

Construction has started and crews are getting ready to drill piles. The old bridge has been removed and placed beside the new bridge site to be used during construction. The road is expected to reopen around May 12, 2026.

Crews have started to remove the bridge from the abutments, and will be used only by construction crews during this phase.

The contractor started working on tree clearing the week of December 15.

The tentative plan is to begin moving equipment to the site in late January to early February 2026.
