Municipal Naming in Sturgeon County

Do you ever wonder how parks, roads, or county-owned buildings are named in Sturgeon County?

In YEAR, Sturgeon County established a Municipal Naming Policy which guides the naming of municipal assets in a way that reflects our heritage and recognizes and commemorates noteworthy persons or organizations associated with the County.

Names of individuals or organizations form the Names Reserve List - a list of names consulted when the County does municipal naming of streets, parks, buildings, and other significant assets.

Propose a Name

Sturgeon County residents have the opportunity to add names to the Names Reserve List. Help honour those who have helped make our County what it is today.

First, review the full naming criteria outlined in the Municipal Naming Policy and the Names Reserve List to see if your proposed name is already on the list.

Next, submit your request to the Naming Committee. The submission will be considered for addition to the Names Reserve List at the next update of the list. Names submitted for addition are reviewed and evaluated annually by the Naming Committee, which consists of one representative from the following departments and external organizations:

  • Communications and Strategic Services
  • Open Spaces and Agricultural Services
  • Family and Community Social Services
  • Infrastructure and Operational Services
  • Information Technology
  • Planning and Development
  • Protective Services

Please note: adding a name to the Names Reserve List does not guarantee when or if that name will be used for any naming purpose, and submissions containing inappropriate language will be disregarded.

Name Removal

The Municipal Naming Policy allows residents to request that a name be removed from the Names Reserve List or a municipal asset if it meets the name removal criteria.

Applications for removal of a name will be considered where the name:

  • Refers to current or historic persons known for their discriminatory views or actions, including committing or perpetuating acts of racism, violence, or harm
  • Includes derogatory terms that might represent or be linked with discriminatory views and actions
  • Negatively represents any group or its culture
  • Brings the County into disrepute

Documented support from the community - a minimum of 50 people with substantial connections to St. Albert - is required with the application. To show proof of support, the applicant can provide a list of supporting signatures or letters of support.

Names submitted for removal are reviewed by the Naming Committee, who compares the evidence provided against the criteria set out in the Municipal Naming Policy. If the request meets the criteria of the policy, it goes to Council to for decision. Only Council can remove a name from the Names Reserve List or a municipal asset.
