Sturgeon County is recruiting for election workers to work advance voting days and on Election Day.

Hiring is underway for Sturgeon County’s 2025 Municipal Election.

  • All positions are paid.
  • Training is mandatory and paid for all positions.
  • Positions are filled as applications are received.

Job opportunities are offered for the following events:

  • Advance voting dates:
    • Saturday, October 11, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
    • Thursday, October 16, 2025 – 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, October 18, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Election Day: Monday, October 20, 2025

Eligibility and Qualifications

You can be an election worker if you are:

  • Eligible to work in Canada, and
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Note: You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to apply.

Qualifications

For all positions, prior election experience will be considered a definite asset.

  • You must be available to attend a mandatory training session.
  • Strong communication, mathematic and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work long hours.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to adhere to directions and standards.
  • Ability to learn in a short time frame.
  • Able to lift 15 pounds.

Job Descriptions

Election workers are needed to help with voting opportunities and the counting of ballots. Sturgeon County Election Staff will provide all election workers with the required training and direction to effectively run the election process for voters.

Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO – Supervisory)

As PDRO you will have significant authority in your voting station to ensure everything runs smoothly. You will ensure the station is set up and closed as per the outlined procedures. You will supervise, direct and assist election worker staff. You will also assist voters, deal with candidates and observers, keep proper records, correspond with the Election Office and troubleshoot issues as necessary. PDROs may also be required to work a minimum of one advance voting date in addition to election day.

Pay: $30/hour, plus training amount, mileage and use of personal mobile phone allowances

Deputy Returning Officer – Registration (DRO-R)

You will assist with station set up and check all supplies received from the PDRO. You will provide direction to voters, assist voters, including voters who require additional assistance or support, process voters on the County’s Permanent Electors Register, confirm voter ID requirements, complete voting register forms as required and accurately issue ballots in accordance with proper procedure, and ensure marked ballots are deposited in the correct ballot boxes. You will assist with the close of the voting station and complete closing procedures. Following the close of the voting station on Election Day, you will complete the counting of ballots. Basic computer skills and use is required.

Pay: $26/hour, plus training amount

Deputy Returning Officer – Information (DRO-IO)

You will greet voters, answer voters ID questions, direct voters to available DRO stations, manage lines, assist other workers where necessary, and assist voters, including voters with disabilities who require additional assistance or support. Community knowledge is desirable. Duties may also include break coverage for the Deputy Returning Officer – Registration and assisting with the close of the voting station as directed by the PDRO as well as the counting of ballots post-election.

Pay: $26/hour, plus training amount

Standby Worker

A Stand-by Worker is ready to fill in if another election worker cancels at the last minute. You must attend a required training session and be ready to go to the assigned location on short notice.

Pay: The training pay for a standby worker is the same compensation as the position being trained for. Similarly, pay for work performed on advance voting day(s) or election day is the same compensation as the position you are called in to fill.
